How to Fix a Lid Switch Actuator for a Washer That Has Spinning Issues

The lid switch actuator is a small but essential part of the lid switch assembly that keeps your top-load washer closed and allows it to operate. If it is broken, your washer will not be able to lock and proceed through its cycles. If it is damaged, you will likely need a new actuator to restore your washer to full working condition.

What is a Lid Switch Actuator?

The lid switch actuator works in conjunction with the lid switch to inform the washer whether the lid is open or closed. This is a safety feature to ensure that the machine won’t operate while the lid is lifted. If the actuator has become damaged or worn out, it can prevent the washer from spinning, since it is not able to determine if the lid is open or closed.

Where is the Lid Switch Actuator Located?

Lift the lid to your washer and you will find the lid switch actuator under the lid. It normally looks like a little piece of plastic/metal that's protruding from your washer lid.

FIX TIP

Remember that before handling any electronic appliances to disconnect the power source from your appliance before beginning to avoid electrocution.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect a Lid Switch Actuator

  1. Depending on your model, the lid switch actuator may be held in place with a screw or with a locking tab. Open the washer lid and use either pliers to depress the locking tab or a screwdriver to remove the screw.
  2. The old actuator can then be removed and discarded.

How to Test a Lid Switch Actuator

  1. You'll want to use your multimeter to check for electrical continuity. If the actuator is not showing continuous power, you will need to replace it.
  2. Set your multimeter to the Rx1 setting, and touch the probes to the terminals. If there is continuity, the multimeter should show a reading of zero or nearly zero.
  3. If your test produces a different result, you'll need a replacement lid switch actuator.

How to Install a New Washer Lid Switch Actuator

Depending on your washer model, either insert the new actuator into the slot, ensuring that the locking tabs engage, or install the new actuator and use a screwdriver to secure the screw in place.
